Atlas Coal Mines & Drumheller tour - field study May 23rd

Students learned a lot about Alberta history on an amazing day out in the Drumheller area.  First it was Atlas Coal Mines, where students had a train ride and tunnel tour, going right into the side of the hill.  One of the things we learned is that the conditions were not particularly safe for miners!   This was the most educational part of the trip, and for many, a favourite.  Another favourite was the next site, the Hoodoo Trail.  We had beautiful weather and a good time scrambling around the rocks and posing for photos.  Star Mine Suspension Bridge (stock photo) was a cool, wobbly bridge used by miners from the Rosedale Mine until it closed.  A year later, a big landslide wrecked the mine and the bridge, so the one we crossed is a re-build.  Horseshoe Canyon was our last stop, allowing us a great view of an amazing part of Alberta's geology.

The students walked to Telus Spark for two sessions, plus some exploration in the centre and the playground.  The sessions were on machines (with a focus on cam systems) and on making a play with shadow puppets.  We also explored some ground floor exhibits and the "Brainasium" outdoor play area.

Remembrance Ceremony - November 9, 2018

We have no photos of the ceremony, as it is a solemn one and photos aren't allowed.  Our grade fours did a wonderful job performing "Please Wear a Poppy", a fairly long poem that explains why wearing poppies is important.  We were very proud of the job they did, and how well they represented our school.

Making Crab Apple Jelly - September 2018

Making Crab Apple (or Crabapple) Jelly was a great time!  There were many steps.  First we gathered donations of apples / crab apples, but we needed to get some more.  Some of the donated ones were rotten because we didn't have enough refrigerator storage space.  We went on a field study to find an pick apples around the neighbourhood. Then we prepared the apples by cutting out any bruised or rotten bits (sometimes just getting rid of the whole apple), and taking off the stem.  For larger apples, we cut out the core. We boiled the apples in some very large pans of hot water, and put them through a sieving system with some cheesecloth.  This drained overnight. The next day, we had a parent volunteer help us.  Thanks so much to Kirsten!  We had delicious juice, but now needed to boil it, stir in a whole lot of sugar, a bit of lemon juice and some pectin to help it set.  All our jars had to be boiled so that the jelly could last for a longer time in the jars without going mouldy.
