Earth Day performance - April 26th

Image
The grade fours performed for the whole school at our Earth Day assembly.  They did a great, complex performance of a piece called "One Planet".  Ms Tryon taught them.  It included singing and playing by recorders, metallophones, glockenspiels and xylophones.

Earth Day celebrations!

Image
The whole school was asked to celebrate the Earth Day initiatives they'd done.  We've all done so many!  Room 304 celebrated their water work with the grade nines, vermicomposting and litterless lunch.  Room 306 celebrated their bin labelling, letter writing (to grocery stores to ask them to use less plastic), litterless lunch and battery recycling.

Simple Machines work - April

Image
These are some photos from Simple Machine work done in Room 306/Finlay.  In the earlier pictures, students are using K'Nex kits to make their own pulley design, then using the kit instructions to make various lever examples like scissors, a hockey stick and a wheelbarrow.  In the later pictures on a different day, students have a "Rescue" challenge where they pretend they have to try to rescue a hiker who has fallen down the mountain. They have to built a stable platform that the hiker can crawl into, and a winch/pulley to send the platform down the side of the mountain and pull it back up with the hiker.

Orange Shirt Day - Design Contest

Image
Students (of any age) are invited to submit a design for Orange Shirt Day.  The deadline is Friday, May 17th. Orange Shirt Day is a national movement that recognizes the experience of survivors of Indian residential schools. The winning design will be used on the shirts for fall 2019.  The winner will be invited to an event (we think it's in Edmonton) on September 30th, and be presented with a framed copy of their artwork.  More details:  The official title is "Every Child Matters".  You are welcome to include these words in your design, but it's not mandatory.  Click here for more info
